En los últimos años hemos asistido al renovado interés desde los más diversos ámbitos de las Ciencias Humanas por la recuperación y el estudio del patrimonio documental. No son una excepción los filólogos e historiadores de la lengua, para quienes los documentos son fuente primordial para el conocimiento del español de épocas pasadas. La aplicación de enfoques metodológicos innovadores al estudio de estos materiales está dando importantes resultados y obligando a revisar muchos de los presupuestos tradicionalmente aceptados. Por otra parte, los esfuerzos por elaborar corpus electrónicos etiquetados y por desarrollar herramientas informáticas que faciliten los análisis lingüísticos prometen poner a disposición del investigador unos recursos hasta ahora insospechados. Los trabajos que se recogen en este volumen abordan diversos aspectos de la edición y el estudio de documentos hispánicos de la Edad Media al siglo XIX, centrándose en tres grandes temas: los documentos y la historia de la lengua, la documentación americana y la edición electrónica y los corpus documentales.
